Every Denago eBike ever manufactured has been designed to meet the UL2849 and UL2271 standards from the beginning. In October, 2023 Denago achieved formal UL2849 and UL2271 certification on 8 eBike models following the testing of our eBikes at a UL-approved partner lab, with additional models already in the testing and certification pipeline.

Who is UL? (Underwriters Laboratories)

Underwriters Laboratories is a global safety science organization developing certification standards to assess the safety and reliability of industrial, commercial, and consumer goods. Brands like Denago trust UL to establish safety standards for products like eBikes.

What is UL2849?

UL’s 2849 is the industry-wide testing standard for eBikes, offering safety certification via testing and evaluation of the complete eBike system, including motors, batteries, and chargers. Testing is performed at a UL partner lab and products that pass are UL2849 certified.

What is UL2271?

Unlike UL2849, UL2271 is a certification for a single eBike component - batteries - and does not apply to the rest of the bike. UL2271 is also important, because batteries are stocked, sold, and shipped separately from eBikes - for example, a customer may want to purchase a second battery to extend their range, or take delivery of a battery for warranty replacement purposes. The UL2271 certification ensures that Denago and our retail partners can continue to offer individual batteries, separately from complete bikes.

Future unreleased models are currently in the testing process, and are expected to achieve certification to the same standards.

Which Denago eBike batteries are UL2271 certified?

As of this writing, all UL2849 certified Denago eBike models also include a UL2271 certified battery. This includes:

  • City 1 Top Tube and Step-thru
  • Commute 1 Top Tube and Step-thru
  • City 2 Top Tube and Step-thru

  • Cruiser 1 Top Tube and Step-thru
  • Fat Tire Top Tube and Step-thru

Why are UL2849 and UL2271 important?

In addition to our desire to build safe and reliable products, these certifications are also increasingly necessary in some cities - for example, New York City requires that only UL2849-certified eBikes are offered for sale within city limits. There are also other entities requiring UL2849 and UL2271, such as landlords who don't allow non-certified eBikes to be stored on property as a condition of a lease.

Denago believes that our customers and dealers are best served when they ride and sell UL2849 and UL2271 certified products, even though the testing process is expensive and time-consuming.
