Denago's Commute Model 1 and Magnum's Metro X and Navigator X eBikes are firmly aimed at the bicycle commuter market. Each is packed with convenience features to improve your experience riding to work or school.

These eBikes, each powered by 48 Volt eBike systems with 500 Watt rear hub motors are all capable of Class III speeds (up to 28 MPH on pedal assist and 20 MPH on throttle.) While they look similar on the surface, a closer inspection reveals some key differences.

Let's examine the pros and cons of the Denago Commute Model 1, Magnum Metro X, and Navigator X eBikes:

The Denago Commute Model 1, Magnum Metro X, and Navigator X eBikes have these features in common

The Denago Commute Model 1, Magnum Metro X, and Navigator X eBikes share some features and specifications that are very similar, if not identical, including:

  • rear rack
  • fenders
  • suspension fork
  • suspension seatpost
  • adjustable-angle stem
  • hydraulic disc brakes

All three models are capable of Class III eBike speeds - up to 28 MPH on pedal assist, up to 20 MPH on throttle.

How the Denago Commute Model 1, Magnum Metro X, and Navigator X eBikes are different:

The Magnum Metro X, Navigator X and Denago Commute Model 1 eBikes differ in these key areas:

  • Batteries: the battery capacities are close, but not identical at 720 Wh (Metro X), 576 Wh (Navigator X), and 652.8 Wh (Commute Model 1.)
  • Denago uses LG cells, Magnum uses Samsung; both are premium brands
  • On the Magnum Navigator X and Denago Commute Model 1, the battery is integrated within the frame for a sleek look. On the Metro X, the battery is a "camel hump" style, which makes it more obvious that you're riding an eBike.
  • The Denago uses a higher-end color display, while the Magnum models use a basic monochrome display.
  • Magnum uses a 2 Amp charger, which will take longer to charge your battery compared with the 3 Amp Denago charger.
  • The Magnum models use 26" x 2.4" and 26" x 2.2" tires. It's not clear from their published specifications whether they are eBike-rated for higher speeds. The Denago uses eBike-rated 27.5 x 2.6" tires, which offer more air volume for comfort and control on bumpy roads. 27.5" tires are in much more common use on mid-to-high end bikes compared with 26", which means that there are many more tread shapes and styles available to customize an eBike for your local terrain.
  • The Denago Commute Model 1 uses an 8 speed drivetrain compared with 7 speed on the Metro X and 8 speed on the Navigator X.
  • All 3 models have lights, but the Magnum models have active brake lights, which are not offered on the Denago.
  • Denago's Commute Model 1 comes in two sizes to suit riders of different height; the two Magnum models only come in a single size.
  • As of this writing, these bikes sell for:
    • $1,999 - Denago Commute Model 1
    • $2,099 - Magnum Metro X
    • $2,199 - Magnum Navigator X

Which commuter eBike should you buy?

The Denago Commute Model 1, Magnum Metro X, Magnum Navigator X are very closely matched in price, speed, and range capabilities. Each can get you to work without breaking a sweat.

Key spec upgrades on the Denago include the superior color display, better drivetrain (vs. the Metro X), and integrated battery (vs. the Metro X.) While the more modern Navigator X does add an integrated battery and 8 speed drivetrain, matching the Denago, it's also $200 more, and has wheels and tires that aren't as good, as well as a slower charger. That's important to consider if you're trying to charge your eBike during the day before your evening commute.

Shorter or taller riders will also find the two sizes offered on the Denago Commute Model 1 do a better job of fitting them than the "one size fits all" approach of the two Magnum models.

The two Magnum models do have a nice feature for riding at night the Denago lacks - active brake lights that light up when you squeeze the brake lever. Denago's Fat Tire eBike offers this feature, but not the Commute Model 1. They also have many color choices, while the Denago comes in a single color for the Top tube version, and another color for the Step-thru version.
